Being a sustainable business matters

Auckland Airport is for the world we’ll travel tomorrow. We are committed to making a positive contribution through our business activities, operating in a way that creates enduring value for New Zealand and generations to come.

Auckland Airport was one of New Zealand’s early adopters of sustainability principles and has made considerable progress in the areas of emissions reductions, energy savings, waste management and social performance. In 2024, we refreshed our sustainability framework to focus on three key pillars:

Protect Planet
  • Climate
  • Natural environment
  • Waste
Empower People
  • Community
  • Our people
  • Wellbeing and safety
Act Consciously
  • Governance
  • Responsible supply chain
  • Reporting and disclosures

By focusing on the pillars of our sustainability framework – through looking after our planet, empowering people and acting responsibly - we’re committed to creating enduring value and positive impacts for our communities, economy, and environment. Big dreams like these don’t happen by themselves. We are taking proactive steps to help minimise the impact of our operations, building greater resilience into the airfield to support the decarbonisation of aviation, and working with airlines to understand their needs and requirements for low-carbon aircraft. The Auckland Airport Master Plan, currently being refreshed, intends to future-proof the precinct for lower-carbon air travel and road transport.

What matters most

Every three years we undertake a comprehensive materiality assessment involving input from key internal and external stakeholders to identify the sustainability issues and topics that are most significant for our business. In our 2024 materiality assessment, we applied the principles of double materiality and aligned our approach with the Global Reporting Index 2021 Standard and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Our 2024 material issues are:

  1. Health, safety and wellbeing
  2. Customer experience
  3. Wider economic contribution
  4. Responsible employer
  5. Sustainable infrastructure
  6. Climate change mitigation and adaptation
  7. Diversity, equity, and inclusion

And although they have not been identified as highly material to the business in the 2024 materiality assessment, Auckland Airport is committed to being a good neighbour and will continue to focus on the following topics:
  • Aircraft noise
  • Community and tangata whenua involvement
  • Reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions
  • Minimising waste
  • Minimising our environmental impact
